Up-coming Formation Topics

This week’s (Sunday August 10) 9:15 formation topic comes by popular request of last week’s formation class: Original Sin. We’ll look at the usual concept of original sin, the biblical underpinnings of the idea (or not), and some different and more modern conceptions of the consequences of the fall.

Next week (Sunday August 17) we’ll engage in some historical and speculative theology, examining the biblical and traditional “planes of existence”. We’ll talk about resurrection and eternal life, heaven, hell, and the “Romish” (The Thirty Nine Articles doctrines of purgatory and limbo.

As a jumping-off point for both discussions, See: The Articles of Religion IX. Of Original Sin (BCP p. 869) and XXII. Of Purgatory (BCP p. 872) (Note that The Articles are an historical document describing the teachings of the Episcopal Church ca. 1800 and neither bind nor describe our teachings today.). See also The Catechism section “The Christian Hope” that begins on BCP p. 861. (The Catechism is not binding, but does broadly describe the Episcopal Church’s basic beliefs in current times.)
